Curator’s Note These are not the sorts of film you are used to. Their meanings are vague. They don’t have a linear narrative thread. There may be no narrative thread at all. They are a mélange of so many things. They won’t give you any particular message. They are neither educational nor political commentaries. So they won’t talk about how bad the government is or how poor the country is. Those messages are really boring! If we wanted to make such commentaries, we wouldn’t have needed to spend so much time making these films. We would have just printed things that you want to hear on posters and put them up all over the city. No need for any creativity at all. Great works of video art are things of their own; they take you somewhere and you are left with some sort of fulfillment at the end of the film. For these kinds of film, you won’t even ask why they were made or what kind of issue they deal with. They are perfect as they are. I don’t know how long we will have to wait until we have such works in our country—we have to try harder, obviously. We just can’t let ourselves drown in social issues forever. Lastly, I can’t guarantee that the films in this category will stir your soul like a rippling surface of water or move you like leaves in a storm.

Part of My Life

When you arrive at a place that you have never been, or seen, or known before, what will you do? I know lots of people will take selfies. When I arrived in Venice, a city slowly sinking underwater, I felt like I was encountering a woman who I had never made love to but was about to. I saw tourists doing this and that, but that wasn’t good enough for me. The train had left the station, but I decided to stay in this country

မာဆယ္ဒူးရြန္႕ကိုအရိုအေသေပးျခင္း

Homage to Marcel Duchamp by Htein Lin

Htein Lin made this video in 2006 on his first visit to France, on honeymoon.  He had recently left Myanmar where his performance art  had centred on his body and engagement with the audience. While he was inspired by new experiences in  a foreign countries, and  their artistic heritage, he had no audience to perform to, other than a new video camera which he was only beginning to learn how to use.. 

In a house in rural France he came across his first bidet and his first unicycle. This revived memories of Marcel Duchamp's urinal and bicycle wheel, images he had seen in magazines and books in Myanmar.  

'Homage to Marcel Duchamp' is an experimentation with a bidet, a cycle, a bath and a camera.  Without proper editing software and skills, Htein Lin opted to turn the camera upside to up-end the image, to depict himself as an artist cycling with the world on his back, an artist struggling against resistance, provided by rubber gloves, before the artist is engulfed by a bath but keeps peddling.  The video is minimalist, improvised and humorous, like much of Htein Lin's art.

ကြ်န္မဟာ ေၾကြကိုုအဓိကအသံုုးျပဳတဲ့ အနုုပညာရွင္တစ္ေယာက္ ျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ ဒီ႐ုပ္ရွင္က stop-motion animation နည္းစနစ္ေတြကိုု အသံုုးျပဳျပီး စမ္းသပ္ဖန္တီးထားတဲ့လက္ရာပါ။ ကြ်န္မရဲ႕အနုုပညာလက္ရာေတြကိုု ဖန္တီးတဲ့အခါ အခ်ိဳ႕ေသာအရာဝတၳဳေတြမွာ အသက္ဇီဝနဲ႔ ေမွာ္ဓါတ္ေတြ စိမ့္ဝင္ေနတယ္ဆိုုတဲ့ သေဘာတရားက ကြ်န္မကိုုေစ့ေဆာ္မႈျပဳပါတယ္။ ဒီသေဘာတရားဟာ ျမန္မာတိုု႔ရဲ႕ေရွး႐ိုုးရာယံုုၾကည္မႈအတြင္းကေန လာတာျဖစ္ပါတယ္။ သက္မဲ့ျဖစ္ေပမယ့္ ေမွာ္ဓါတ္ေတြကိန္းေအာင္းေနတဲ့ အရာဝတၳဳေတြထဲမွာ စိတ္ကူးၾကည့္လိုု႔ရ တဲ့လႈပ္ရွားသက္ဝင္မႈေတြ ရိွေနတယ္ဆိုုတဲ့ကိစၥကိုု ကြ်န္မစိတ္ဝင္စားမိပါတယ္။ ဒီစိတ္ဝင္စားမႈ ေၾကာင့္လည္း stop-motion animation ဘက္ကိုု ေရာက္ခဲ့တာျဖစ္တယ္။

အဆန္းတၾကယ္ျဖစ္တဲ့ အိမ္ဆန္ဆန္ေႏြးေထြးမႈမ်ိဳး က်ီးကန္းရဲ႕အသိုုက္ထဲမွာ ရိွေနတယ္ဆိုု တာကို ဒီ႐ုုပ္ရွင္ကေန ကြ်န္မေဖာ္ထုုတ္ျပသခ်င္တာျဖစ္တယ္။ က်ီးကန္းေတြဟာ ေတာ္ေတာ္ ေလးပါးနပ္တဲ့ သတၱဝါေတြပါ။ ပတ္ဝန္းက်င္မွာရိွတဲ့ အတိုုအစမ်ိဳးစံုုကိုုေကာက္ယူစုုေဆာင္းျပီး သူတိုု႔ရဲ႕အသိုုက္ကိုု ေဆာက္လုုပ္ပါတယ္။ ဒီ႐ုုပ္ရွင္ထဲမွာလည္း က်ီးကန္းအသိုုက္ရဲ႕အမယ္စံုု လင္ျခင္းသေဘာအေပၚမွာ ကြ်န္မကစိတ္ကူးကစားထားျပီး၊ ဖန္သားဆန္တဲ႔ သစ္ကိုုင္းေတြနဲ႔ လူ႔ရဲ႕လက္ေတြပါဝင္တဲ့ က်ီးကန္းအသိုုက္တစ္ခုုတည္ေဆာက္ပံုုကိုု ေျပာျပထားပါတယ္။ ဒီ႐ုပ္ရွင္ဟာ လူသားနဲ႔တိရစာၦန္ၾကားက ပါဝါအားျပိဳင္မႈအေၾကာင္းေတြးေတာဖိုု႔အတြက္လည္း ကြ်န္မကိုု အစေဖာ္ေပးပါတယ္။ အဲဒီပါဝါအားျပိဳင္မႈကိုု က်ီးကန္းအသိုုက္တစ္ခုုအတြင္းမွာ ေျပာင္းျပန္လွန္လိုုက္ျခင္းအားျဖင့္ ပါဝါကိုုအလြဲသံုုးစားလုုပ္ျခင္းနဲ႔ ပါဝါကုုိအသံုုးျပဳျခင္းၾကားက မ်ဥ္းပါးပါးေလး ရိွေနေၾကာင္းကိုုလည္း ထင္ဟပ္ျပျခင္းျဖစ္ပါတယ္။

ဒီ႐ုပ္ရွင္ကိုုဖန္တီးရာမွာ ေၾကြနဲ႔လုုပ္ထားတဲ့သစ္ကိုုင္းေတြရယ္၊ ကြ်န္မထုုဆစ္ထားတဲ့လက္ေတြ ရယ္ကိုု ဓါတ္ပံုု႐ိုုက္၊ အဲဒီေနာက္ စာ႐ြက္ေပၚမွာ ပရင့္လုုပ္လိုုက္ျခင္းအားျဖင့္ ဒစ္ဂ်စ္တယ္ျဖစ္ ေအာင္လုုပ္လိုုက္ပါတယ္။ အဲဒီေနာက္ Light box ေပၚတင္ျပီး အ႐ုပ္ေတြအသက္ဝင္လာ ေအာင္ျပဳလုုပ္ပါတယ္။ ႐ုုပ္ပံုုေတြရဲ႕႐ုုပ္သေဘာေျပာင္းလဲမႈကိုု ကြ်န္မစိတ္ဝင္စားတယ္။ ေၾကြလက္ေတြက ဖန္သားလိုုၾကည္လင္လာတယ္၊ အေလးခ်ိန္မဲ့လာတယ္၊ ျပီးေတာ့ ႐ုုပ္ရွင္ ဟာ ပံုုသဏၰာန္မဲ့လာတယ္။ သစ္ကိုုင္းေတြ အခ်င္းခ်င္းထိခိုုက္မိတဲ့အသံကိုုေတာ့ ေၾကြထည္ ေတြကိုု တစ္ခုုနဲ႔တစ္ခုုထိခတ္ေစရင္း ဖန္တီးခဲ့ပါတယ္။ ဖန္သားရဲ႕သိမ္ေမြ႔ႏူးည့ံတဲ့အသံ ထြက္ လာရေအာင္ပါ။ ေနာက္ခံဂီတကိုုေတာ့ youtube မွာေတြ႔ရတဲ့ ဖန္သားနဲ႔တီးခတ္ထားတဲ့ ဂီတ ေဖ်ာ္ေျဖမႈကေန ယူထားတာပါ။ ဒီဂီတကိုု ကြ်န္မ မပိုုင္ပါဘူး။ 

 

Ceramic Nest

I am a ceramic artist. This video is my experimentation with stop-motion animation techniques. In my work, I am inspired by animism in Burmese folk religion, the belief that certain inanimate objects are imbued with life and magical forces. I am interested in the imagined movement within the inanimate magical objects, and this brings my interest to stop-motion animation.

In this video, I hope to convey the sense of an uncanny homeliness of the crow’s nest. Crows are very smart creatures. They salvage very eclectic materials in proximity to create their nest. I play on the idea of this eclecticism of the bird’s nest and narrate the process of a crow building a nest comprises of glassy branches and human hands. The video was also an entry point for me to think about the power dynamics between human and animals. Through inversion of this power dynamics wthin the crow’s nest, I reflect on the fine line between use and abuse between the two.

During the process of producing this video, I digitalized the ceramic branches and nurturing hands that I sculpted by photographing them and printing them on paper. Then, I animated the imagery under the light box. I am interested in this change in materiality of an imagery- the ceramic hands became translucent like glass, weightless, and the video became formless. The sound of branches colliding was created from colliding ceramics pieces to bring out the ethereality of the sound of glass. The musical part was glass music performance I found on youtube. Tea Time in Spring

Tea Time in Spring is the first video work created by Wah Nu, as well as being one of the earliest examples of video art in Myanmar. According to the artist, this work is a study on psychological stage that was one of her interests in early days back then. She often tried to make the artworks reflecting the restless mind of people and this is she also created are mainly about the conflict of two different situations of contrasts which are somehow in relation, i.e. the conscious and unconscious minds or the worlds of imagination and reality. This is why we find most of her works conveying double meanings. In this work, repetition of the lines of ants moving on a wall symbolized the inner feeling of a person indulging in imagination. This reflects “the restless stream of mind flowing every moment”. However, this work on the whole obviously shows (like her other works) the artist’s solitude and loneliness. Which one is more important then; the restless mind the artist tried to present or the solitude that has found in her work? Whatever the answer is, actually, not a big matter. Both the restless mind and lonesome solitude reflect our existence who are exiled from outside world for nearly half the century. The title does reflect a lovely, peaceful, comfortable recess. But the artist presents the dull, restless lives under pressures at the same time.

The soil of this place had been not only very good for agriculture, but also there are rocks which are being mined for construction process. The mini-sculpture trees are samples Gem-art from our native town Mogok, Myanmar. I combined a memory of my native town and the memory place Skalka by displaying mini-sculptures and documented by video.

The       title, Nightless came from the fact that there exists almost no night images in Google street view.
